The Ghent University Botanical Garden was established in 1797, making it one of the oldest botanical gardens in Belgium. It was originally created to support the university's medical and pharmaceutical studies, providing a living laboratory for research and education. Over the years, the garden has expanded its collection and its role, becoming a valuable resource for conservation, public education, and scientific research. The garden's historical greenhouses, some dating back to the 19th century, are architectural gems in themselves. Visitors can explore a variety of themed gardens, including a medicinal herb garden, a tropical greenhouse, a succulent collection, and a systematic garden showcasing plant families. Attend guided tours to learn about the garden's history, its plant collections, and its conservation efforts. Relax by the pond, observe the diverse birdlife, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The garden also hosts workshops, exhibitions, and events throughout the year, making it a dynamic and engaging destination.
